With the apparent demise of the McDonough book, there's a new Neil biography on the horizon. Presumably it's unauthorized (e.g. without Neil's cooperation). It's listed at Amazon, with a June 2000 availability:

Neil Young, by Alexis Petridis

For more than 30 years, Neil Young's fans have appreciated his individualistic stance, his unique sound, and his determination never to take the easy route. Neil Young provides a concise, well-researched view into the career of this rock and roll giant. Alexis Petridis includes full biographical information and a complete discography as he explores the influence of Young on everybody from Sonic Youth and Ron Sexsmith to Nirvana.

Subject: Dutch Neil TV Report

Yesterday evening, the Dutch pop programme Lollapaloeza announced that they'd show "an intimate Neil Young concert in Austin with some new material and some oldies from his vast career he built up since the sixties, amongst others with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY." Sounded great, but it was just 45 minutes of the S&G video... It was a bit disappointing, since the only "oldies" were Long May You Run and Harvest Moon. They even skipped Razor Love!

Their research was not even very good, saying that the record Silver & Gold was shaped during a "short tour of solo concerts" in 1999. I don't know how many shows the 1999 tour exactly contained (40 or so??) but I would not classify it as short. And I think they even got some of the subtitles wrong....

Disappointing for freaks like us, but it was great, anyway, that they gave Neil some airplay.

Take it easy all,

In Vancouver, the Georgia Strait has Silver & Gold in a long decline. It debuted at #7, peaked at #5, dropped to #11, now is sitting at #18. Four weeks in the Top 20 is not a bad showing, unless you consider all the drivel that sells these days!

The D-Files. From the vast underground caverns of Dave's interview mine comes a glimpse at 3 members of the "supergroup of the 60's, 70's and 80's" (remind you of something that phrase?) Neil Young, Steve Stills and Graham Nash were 3 quarters of CSN&Y, that multiplatinum supergroup. Dave talked to Neil Young + Stills & Nash in June 87, and to Stills and Nash in Oct 92 during a live date here in Ireland. Are the legendary stories of their fighting and squabbling really true..? Do they even talk to each other any more? Are they just a washed out load of old hippies..? Over 30 years of being abused by the music business hasn't dulled their wit all that much as you'll hear ..

The Guitar Magazine (a UK publication) has Elvis Costello as the subject of an interview in the May 2000 issue. Listed among his favorite guitarists is Neil. It says:

"Neil Young is really important to me. In fact, he's appealed to me more and more over the last 10 years," stresses Costello. "He doesn't quite have great technique, but he has great conviction. And I do too. Better players, accomplished players, often play within themselves all the time. The trouble is that they can play so well, they find it difficult to lose themselves. Some nights I have moments on the guitar when I don't really know what I'm doing...but it comes out sounding good." He gives a big grin. "Other times it just comes out a lot of nonsense."
Also listed are Marc Ribot, Robbie Robertson, Richard Thompson, Amos Garrett, and Jerry Garcia.

Subject: Kevn Kinney does it like Neil

Kevn Kinney, best known as frontman for the band Drivin'n'Cryin', also does a lot of folky acoustic stuff. Does this sound familiar?:

For the moment, Kinney seems intent on focusing on his solo career, explaining that he'd like to do another acoustic folk album before turning the volume up again for another outing with DNC. "I got kind of burned out on it a little bit -- it's a loud band," he laughs. "Drivin' n' Cryin' is kind of on hold right now. I'm taking a sabbatical from them for about a year -- I've done everything I can do with them for awhile, and I need to write more songs."
The similarity to Neil's modus operandi is no coincidence. Here's the rest of the statement he was making above...
"My idol musically is Neil Young and Crazy Horse," he says. "Drivin' n' Cryin' is Crazy Horse to me. It will forever go on. When I rock, I prefer to play with them, and that's what I'm going to do for the next twenty years or so."

Subject: Focus on Devo

On Devo's new archive box Pioneers Who Got Scalped (An Anthology) they include their performance of It Takes A Worried Man from Neil's Human Highway movie. When I heard they were working on this box set, I was hoping that they'd include the strange version of Hey Hey My My from the film, since it's as much a Devo version as it is a Neil version. But they didn't.

Here's the paragraph from the box's liner notes regarding Devo's Neil connection:

In the aftermath of Duty Now For The Future, Devo embarked on a brief collaboration with Neil Young, appearing as a group of blissfully radioactive nuclear garbagemen in Neil Young's little-seen feature film, Human Highway. The connection between Devo and Young wasn't quite as unlikely as it may have seemed: they both shared a manager (Elliot Roberts) and a record label during this period. (Young himself was obviously a Devo fan; even a casual listen to his subsequent album, Trans -- a much-misunderstood, highly controversial foray into electronic sound--betrays Devo's massive influence.) While Human Highway can most charitably be described as an ungodly mess, Devo's bouncy (and previously unreleased) remake/remodel of The Kingston Trio's 1959 hit, It Takes A Worried Man, provides one of the film's finest moments.
I still think the film's Hey Hey My My would have been better....

Subject: Chantal does Neil

Friday night, my daughter and her friend (both 15) and I attended a show at the Odeon by Canadian singer/ songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk. This lady has an incredible multi-octave voice which works well with her piano based material. Her songwriting is very strong with thoughtful lyrics and catchy pop melodies that are not syrupy in any way. She is also obviously classically trained on the piano -- her work on the Baby Grand is quite complex, and compelling.

Anyway the performance Friday was very impressive, with an enthusiastic but small club audience. One huge highlight for me was a very powerful and moving cover version of Neil's Old Man.

I've heard her quoted as being a huge Neil fan -- those Canadians stick together. The intimate setting was ironic because Chantal is a huge star in Canada. She won the Juno awards this year for Best Female Artist and for Best Pop Adult Album, so it was a treat to see an act with that kind of firepower in a small hall setting. Check her out if she is touring near you -- only $12.50 a ticket, believe it or not.

Subject: Neil and the Braves

In a newspaper article about the lack of respect that the Atlanta Braves baseball team gets due to their low World Series success, Mark Bradley writes (edited for space):

Neil Young, who is 54, could have gone the route of the Who and the Stones and sung his greatest hits until he keels over, but he continues to crank out records that carry resonance. The latest, Silver & Gold, commands a two-page spread in the current Newsweek. "Better to burn out than to fade away," Young famously wrote, but that was 21 years ago, and he remarkably has done neither.

I see the Braves in a similar light, bright and steady at a time when our attention keeps flitting to the next new and shiny thing. Their names change, but they keep winning. The seasons change, but they keep winning. Those who focus only on October are missing the greater achievement.

In Vancouver, Silver & Gold enters the charts at a respectable No. 7, right behind such notables as Macy Gray, Santana, Moby, Toni Braxton, 'N Shync and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This is according to the local rag The Georgia Strait.

More positively, I can report that S&G is a unanimous No. 1 in The DogHouse. And Without Rings is emerging as my personal favourite.

Subject: Neil on the Cover

Neil is the cover story in issue #35 of Guitar World Acoustic.

Relatively in depth interview about the recording of Silver & Gold. Includes his belief that the album is better without the 3 songs CS&N took, which Neil originally considered the cream of the crop. However he said he had spent a year trying to sequence the tracks and couldn't get it right until those songs were gone. He feels it is a better CD because of it. (Of course he would say that...)

He talks about The writing process for the album and how the last song on the CD, Without Rings, was written the day after coming off the road with Crazy Horse. Because he was hoarse (pun intended) he knew he wouldn't capture the vocal feel again -- so he recorded it the next day.

Several interesting pictures of various career periods.

He also said he felt that S&G was closest to After The Gold Rush in terms of "feel" & "open-ness".

Also talks about the Buffalo Springfield anthology and the "long-awaited" archives.

Honeyslide and I are in New Orleans. Saw Rickie Lee Jones in a small club here called The Howlin' Wolf last night.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band opened and got the crowd fired up.

Rickie came out a little after midnight and opened with The Old Laughing Lady, played on acoustic only. Very nice!
