notes by Mike Caplan
Well, what can I say? CSNY rocked again last nite.
I was lucky enough to be in the front row -- right by Neil! It was incredible.
Some notes:
- Stills came onstage at the beginning with a David Wells Blue Jay
jersey. I just read a blurb in the paper that he and Wells were hanging out
on the field of the Skydome yesterday afternoon.
- Later on in the show Stills said something like "you guys have a great
baseball team here - you should go see them some time". I guess he's never
seen a game at the Skydome or he'd understand why we don't go.
- First set was same as always, but I really enjoyed it.
- Southern Man and Almost Cut My Hair were the usual highlights.
- Cinnamon Girl also rocked pretty good.
- Cros noticed me singing along to Stand & Be Counted and I think he
really liked that -- he gave me a nod and a smile anyways.
- Second set was the same as usual too, but with my improved view I enjoyed
it much more.
- Neil's guitar work on Dream For Him is awesome -- very slow and
melodic.
- Crosby and Nash nailed the harmonies on Goldrush and Guinnevere.
- Stills played a much different solo in Suite: Judy Blue Eyes.
- I think Stephen takes a break after that solo to both catch his breath
and to admire his admirers...
- Third set was 25 minutes shorter than first nite. No Down By The River.
- Woodstock was much better last nite. Neil tore into some solos.
- Eight Miles High was awesome.
- Rockin' In The Free World went on for quite a while. Neil just started
playing it while the others walked around the stage, and then they all scurried
in to join him. Took Cros a minute to get a guitar from the tech guy.
- Before RITFW, Nash was walking to the organ -- so I think everyone
figured it would be DBTR.
- Stills had one of those things on his finger (don't know what it's called
but it's the same thing that slide players use). He was playing a great bluesy
riff of Rockin' while Neil did his thing.
- Attn Chuck: TO crowds suck. Always have, always will. Sports, concerts -
it doesn't matter.
- We had to deal with a lot of shit about "standing," etc. I have no problem
sitting for acoustic music, but it will be a cold day in hell before I sit down
when Neil's doing Southern Man.
- Just as the lights went down for the 2nd set to begin, we stood up to clap
and this lady two rows behind us started yelling ("you guys gonna sit down
already," etc) so I turned around and gave it to her pretty good.
She and her husband said nothing the rest of the way. ;-)
- After the show I asked Larry for the setlist and he gave me Neil's copy
from the stage. I also got one of Neil's picks from one of the roadies.
Needless to say I was a happy camper.
- I think there should be a law that Neil and Stephen must play together in a
rock & roll band every two years or so. They are so incredible together.
Stills would be a great addition to Crazy Horse.
- I'm thinking of heading to Columbus but I doubt I will only because I don't
think the last two nites can be topped.
