early report by Huib Krijgsman
It’s 2 a.m and I just came home from a Neil
Young and Crazy Horse show that was very special, wonderful and
had an absolutely magical end to it.
After the opening by Novastar, a 3 man band from Belgium,
Neil & the Horse stepped up at 9.15. Last goodbyes were
waved at 11.30. In between...
- After Don't Cry No Tears, Neil and Poncho gave each other
a big, big smile, as if to say ‘this is gonna be good’.
- Billy was very inspired with his backup vocals through the whole show.
- Larry played a few chords of piano during Going Home. He sat
at the piano the whole song. I'm not sure if this was the first time ?
- I think Neil lost the words of After The Goldrush. I
recollect the first verse twice and then the "spaceships". No "basement".
- Only Love Can Break Your Heart was played with the full band,
Neil on acoustic guitar and Poncho at the piano this time.
- In Hold You In My Arms, Neil plays piano and a very melodic
guitar. It’s a slow ballad and the piano player gives the song a
somewhat nightclubby atmosphere.
- Astrid & Pegi: no see, no hear.
- Was Opera Star on the original setlist? It looked like Neil
just started it -- the other 3 looked momentarily puzzled, but once
they recognized it they pulled it off great.
- In Sedan Delivery, where Poncho and Billy are supposed to
backup "no one knows", Billy did not step up to the microphone. He sang
to himself standing somewhere between Frank and Neil. Was this the
reason that during this chorus Frank pointed his finger in Billy’s
direction and sang "Billy knows, Billy knows..."?
- After Sedan Delivery, they gave their bows and Ralph threw
the drumsticks into the audience. It seemed like he had to be talked
into doing one more song -- looked like he was not feeling well.
- Cortez was an absolute blast. I have maybe 20 versions of
this one but this was magical -- a once in a lifetime performance. I
think it lasted for some 20 minutes. At times during the solos it was
like Neil forgot all about where he was or who he was. He just kept
on going... Imagine that the Weld version was the
original, and then a whole new version is worked around that one.
The 7000 or 8000 member audience quieted absolutely down for it.
Ahoy was filled with vibes -- must be one of the great moments
in rock history.
This whole Eurotour01 effort deserves our deepest gratitude.
Please don’t miss it.
