Chords/Tabulature for
For The Turnstiles
(Guitjo Version)

Submitted by: Chris Lawrence (mustang@islandnet.com)

Notes about this song:

  • Neil plays a 6-string banjo on this song (a "guitjo"). It's tuned to DGCFAD (like a standard guitar, but a whole step down).
  • However, the gauges of the banjo are like this:
      low D - normal
      G - octave higher
      C - octave higher
      F - octaver higher
      A - normal
      high D - normal
  • Basically, imagine the "high strings" from a 12-string guitar as ADGBE, with a "normal" E string on the bottom. The 2nd fret of the G string should be in unison with the open A string, the 2nd fret of the C string should be in unison with the open D, etc.
  • It gets more complicated... Because Neil strums the strings and finger-picks them at the same time, it's hard to accurately duplicate the precise notes he plays, but its a basic "A G E" chord progression (but the tuning makes it ring "G F D").
  • I'll show accents on the clearest notes from the album version with a > symbol overtop.
Intro:

It's best to just ad-lib hammer-ons, etc,
while playing the 3 chords over and over.

Repeat simile for verse.

Verse:
A G E
All the sailors with their seasick mamas
A G E
Hear the sirens on the shore.
A G E
Singin' songs for pimps with tailors
D A E (see riff)
Who charge ten dollars at the door.

The D A E progression is as follows:
D---2-------------------------------------------------------------
A---3-(strum D)----2-(strum A)------------------------------------
F---2--------------2-------------1--------------------------------
C-0----------------2-------------2-(strum E with ad-lib hammer-ons)
G----------------0---------------2--------------------------------
D--------------------------------0--------------------------------

Chorus:
A G E
You can really learn a lot that way
A G E
It will change you in the middle of the day.
A G E
Though your confidence may be shattered,
D A E
It doesn't matter.

Verse:
All the great explorers
Are now in granite laid,
Under white sheets for the great unveiling
At the big parade.

Chorus:
You can really learn a lot that way
It will change you in the middle of the day.
Though your confidence may be shattered,
It doesn't matter.

Verse:
All the bushleague batters
Are left to die on the diamond.
In the stands the home crowd scatters

D A E
For the turnstiles,
D A E
For the turnstiles,
D A E
For the turnstiles.
